Authorities report third person killed in Spain wildfires

(MENAFN) Authorities in Spain confirmed Thursday that a third person has died while fighting wildfires in the country’s northwest Leon region, marking another tragedy in an already devastating fire season.

Nicanor Sen Velez, prefect for Castile and Leon, said the victim had been involved in the firefighting operation in the Valderia area. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska also confirmed the death, offering condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues, and community.

The announcement came shortly after Spain appealed to the European Union for additional assistance, particularly requesting two water-dropping planes, as nearly 6,000 residents across 26 towns were evacuated due to spreading fires.

This fatality follows two others earlier in the summer — one man who died of severe burns near Madrid, and a 35-year-old volunteer who perished while battling flames in Leon.

Spain is among several European nations facing extreme heat this week, conditions scientists link to climate change, which is fueling more frequent and intense wildfires. So far this year, 199 fires have ravaged nearly 98,800 hectares nationwide — more than double the area destroyed during the same period in 2024.
