Rescue Efforts Continue in Pakistan After Deadly Floods

(MENAFN) Rescuers supported by army personnel and local volunteers persevered on Monday in digging through piles of wreckage across several districts in northwestern Pakistan.

The region has been severely impacted by floods that have swept away entire villages, bridges, and various infrastructure, resulting in more than 350 fatalities in the last four days alone.

The recent death toll from the severe flooding that struck the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday has caused the total number of casualties since the monsoon rains began on June 26 to soar to 670.

During a press briefing held in Islamabad on Monday, Lieutenant General Inam Haider, the head of the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), revealed that approximately 1,000 individuals have sustained injuries due to rain- and flood-related incidents nationwide since June 26.

General Inam stated that officials are continuously striving to reopen roads and reinstate electricity in the districts affected by the floods.

Heavy rainfall persisted in Peshawar, the provincial capital, as well as in neighboring districts Swabi and Noshehra.

Meanwhile, a new monsoon system threatens to hit already flood-devastated areas such as Buner, Swat, Shangla, and Mansehra.

Tragically, intense rains claimed the lives of two young girls in the Harnai district of southwestern Balochistan province on Monday.

Officials remain concerned about an increase in the death toll, as Faraz Mughal, a spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, informed the media that at least 200 individuals remain unaccounted for.
