Bolivia's states country's presidential election will go to runoff

(MENAFN) Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal confirmed Sunday that the presidential election will proceed to a runoff, as no candidate achieved the necessary majority in the first round.

Preliminary results posted on the tribunal’s official website showed Rodrigo Paz Pereira of the Christian Democratic Party leading with around 32.1 percent of the vote, followed by former president Jorge Quiroga of the Alianza Libre coalition with approximately 26.8 percent. A candidate must secure over 50 percent of votes—or at least 40 percent with a margin of more than 10 percentage points over the runner-up—to win outright.

Over 7.5 million Bolivians participated in the election. The second round is scheduled for Oct. 19.
