EU Hits Back at Trump’s Tech Tariff Warning

(MENAFN) The European Union asserted Tuesday that it has full authority to regulate its own economy, pushing back strongly against threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned of new trade penalties over tech-related policies.

“It is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory, which are consistent with our democratic values,” said European Commission chief spokesperson Paula Pinho, addressing reporters in Brussels.

The firm response follows Trump's statement on Truth Social, where he lashed out at the bloc’s tech policies: “Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology...This must end, and end NOW!”

The former president’s comments signal potential moves to levy “substantial additional tariffs” and tighten export rules for countries enacting digital measures he views as biased against U.S. firms.

Still, Pinho emphasized that ongoing transatlantic digital taxation talks are unrelated to broader EU-U.S. negotiations, saying the matter is “separate questions.”

Echoing her stance, the bloc’s tech spokesperson Thomas Regnier rejected the accusation of discrimination, stating that the EU’s regulations apply uniformly: “The EU's rules apply broadly and do not single out U.S. firms.”
