France’s National Assembly Dismisses Impeachment Bid Against Macron
The impeachment bid was introduced by far-left lawmakers from the France Unbowed (LFI) party alongside several Green deputies, accusing Macron of fueling the ongoing political turmoil in the country.
However, the Assembly’s Bureau—tasked with vetting any impeachment attempts—rejected the motion at the initial procedural stage, halting its progress.
Manuel Bompard, LFI’s national coordinator, stated on the US social media platform X that left-wing deputies supported the motion, while Macron’s Renaissance party and the conservative Republicans opposed it. The far-right National Rally lawmakers abstained from voting.
“Le Pen saves Macron again,” Bompard remarked, sharply criticizing the far-right’s decision to abstain.
Earlier this year, 104 opposition deputies had already called for Macron’s impeachment, blaming him for deepening the political crisis triggered by his 2024 decision to dissolve parliament and call snap elections.
This political stalemate following the early polls has plunged France into repeated government upheavals, resulting in three prime ministers in the last year. The most recent, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, stepped down on Oct. 6 amid ongoing budget conflicts and instability.
