U.S. Government Shutdown Continues into Second Week
Both Democratic and Republican proposals to reopen the government were defeated for the sixth consecutive time on Wednesday, deepening the stalemate.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, the leading Republican in the House, urged Senate Democrats to support the GOP’s temporary funding plan.
"Washington Democrats voted for this government shutdown -- and it's families, workers, and small businesses who are being forced to pay the price," Johnson declared Wednesday on X.
In response, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, blamed Republicans and former President Trump for the deadlock. On X, Schumer stated, "The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away" from Americans, adding that Republicans "won't even come to the table to talk to us about it."
Republican leaders maintain a firm stance, refusing to negotiate health care provisions before reopening the government.
According to a recent Congressional Budget Office analysis, approximately 750,000 federal employees face furlough during this ongoing shutdown.
President Donald Trump escalated tensions by threatening to fire federal workers and slash government programs if the shutdown persists. On Tuesday, he warned that some furloughed employees might not receive back pay once operations resume.
