Beijing officials say Taiwan’s leader is selling himself

(MENAFN) Beijing has accused Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te of compromising Taiwan’s interests to promote separatism, following his recent remarks in a US radio interview.

During the interview on a political Show on Monday, Lai reaffirmed his view that Taiwan is an independent nation and not part of China, insisting that Beijing has no right to invade the island. He also suggested that US President Donald Trump should receive the Nobel Peace Prize if he persuades Chinese President Xi Jinping to permanently renounce the use of force against Taiwan.

In response, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office dismissed Lai’s comments as “nonsense” and accused him of “propagating the separatist fallacies of ‘Taiwan independence.’” The statement further charged that “He has engaged in unprincipled foreign pandering and bottomless selling out of Taiwan, squandering the flesh and blood of the people, prostituting himself and throwing in his lot with foreign forces.”

In recent months, several foreign politicians have called for Trump to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in conflict mediation, though many observers see these gestures as largely symbolic or intended to gain favor with the former US president.

Taiwan has long purchased US weapons to deter Chinese military action, with reports indicating that Washington plans to approve arms sales at levels exceeding those during Trump’s first term. Such cooperation remains a major point of tension, as China routinely conducts military exercises near the island.

China maintains that Taiwan is part of its sovereign territory. President Xi Jinping has emphasized that reunification with Taiwan is “inevitable” and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve it.
