Paris public police reveals jewels from Louvre Museum remain missing

(MENAFN) Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed Wednesday that jewels stolen from the Louvre Museum remain unrecovered, though authorities are making “major progress” in the investigation.

Two suspects, both in their 30s with prior criminal records, were arrested Saturday. They reportedly partially admitted their involvement and could face up to 15 years in prison and heavy fines if convicted. DNA evidence helped identify them, and CCTV footage suggests the gang may be larger than the four individuals captured on camera.

The theft occurred in the Apollon Gallery, where the thieves reportedly used power tools to steal eight pieces of French crown jewels within minutes. Prosecutor Beccuau stated there is no evidence of an inside job, confirming that museum staff were not involved.

The Louvre’s director offered her resignation following the heist, but the culture minister refused to accept it. The stolen jewels, valued at around €88 million ($102 million), were not insured. Beccuau expressed hope that the treasures will be recovered and returned “to the Louvre, and more broadly to the nation.”
