Trump Signals Willingness to Negotiate with Maduro
Trump has accused Maduro of leading “narcoterrorist” cartels, a charge that Maduro has firmly denied.
“We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we’ll see how that turns out,” Trump stated on Sunday in Florida before departing for Washington. “They would like to talk,” he added.
The former president reiterated his assertion that the Venezuelan administration has assisted cartels in smuggling drugs into the United States and has allowed “hundreds of thousands” of violent criminals to cross the US border.
He contended that the State Department’s classification of Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organization would grant the US authority to target sites on Venezuelan territory. “It allows us to do that, but we haven’t said we’re going to do that,” Trump explained.
Since September, the US has carried out operations against over 20 suspected cartel ships in international Caribbean waters and deployed a naval fleet to the area, including the USS Gerald R. Ford.
In August, Trump raised the reward for Maduro’s capture to $50 million.
Maduro has rejected the drug trafficking accusations and cautioned the US against initiating “a crazy war.”
