US, Mexican Diplomats Intensify Dialogue on Drug Trafficking

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mexico’s Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente engaged in talks on Sunday regarding joint efforts against drug smuggling, according to an official declaration.

During their phone conversation, the two senior envoys emphasized “the need for stronger cooperation to dismantle Mexico’s violent narcoterrorists networks and stop the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons,” as stated by the US State Department.

Rubio reiterated America’s “commitment to stopping narcoterrorism and stressed the need for tangible results to protect our homeland and hemisphere,” the statement continued.

This announcement followed remarks by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday, who urged deeper collaboration with Washington after US President Donald Trump declared he would soon initiate strikes against cartels operating across the southern frontier.

“We are going to strengthen communication, which is why I asked Juan Ramon de la Fuente to meet with the (US) secretary of state,” Sheinbaum explained. “There is a working group, so we will further strengthen the relationship.”

Separately, in a post on US social platform X, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that de la Fuente spoke with Rubio to "follow up on the Border Security and Law Enforcement Cooperation Program."

The ministry highlighted that the call was conducted under Sheinbaum’s directive, "under the principles of unrestricted respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared responsibility, mutual trust, and collaboration without subordination."
