Indonesia Demands Investigation into Killing of Peacekeeper in Lebanon

(MENAFN) Indonesia on Monday issued a forceful condemnation of the killing of one of its soldiers serving under the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), after the peacekeeper was fatally struck by a projectile explosion late Sunday.

In an official statement, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry demanded a "thorough and transparent" investigation into the incident, asserting that the safety and security of UN peacekeepers must be "fully respected at all times" in accordance with international law.

UNIFIL had earlier confirmed the fatality, stating that a peacekeeper was "tragically" killed when a projectile detonated at a UNIFIL position near the southern Lebanese village of Adchit Al-Qusayr. A second peacekeeper sustained critical injuries in the blast.

Jakarta used the occasion to renew its broader condemnation of Israel's military operations in southern Lebanon, calling on all parties to uphold Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, halt strikes against civilian populations and infrastructure, and return to diplomatic channels to prevent the crisis from spiraling further.

The incident unfolds against a backdrop of escalating regional conflict. Israel has subjected Lebanon to sustained airstrikes and launched a ground offensive in the south following a cross-border assault by Hezbollah on March 2. The broader region has been on a knife's edge since US and Israeli forces launched an air offensive against Iran on Feb. 28 — a campaign that has killed more than 1,340 people to date, among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has since retaliated with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, inflicting casualties and infrastructure damage while rattling global markets and disrupting international aviation.
