Russia Affirms Support for Cuba Amid Fuel Shortages

(MENAFN) Russia has emphasized its commitment to assisting Cuba with essential energy supplies, citing the country’s urgent need for fuel to sustain critical services, the Kremlin said on Monday.

“Under conditions of a severe blockade, our Cuban friends need petroleum products and oil. This is necessary for the operation of the country's life-support systems, for generating electricity, and for providing medical and other services to the population,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated at a Moscow press briefing.

Regarding the US Coast Guard allowing a Russian tanker to reach Cuba, Peskov said Moscow had coordinated with Washington in advance to ensure the delivery of humanitarian oil supplies.

“We are glad that this shipment of petroleum products has arrived on the island,” he added.

On other topics, Peskov dismissed claims that Russia might announce a new wave of military mobilization, saying, “Such a topic is not on the agenda.”

He also reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to supply energy to European markets. Concerning the Russian-Serbian gas contract expiring on March 31, Peskov confirmed it will continue, noting that the deal had been extended for three months and emphasizing Russia’s commitment to being a reliable energy partner, especially for friendly nations such as Serbia.
