Rising Tensions in the Mideast Signal Worsening Global Divide
During discussions held on the sidelines of a strategic communications summit in Istanbul, two senior analysts examined how the expanding conflict is influencing global politics and what it could mean for the future.
Mounting pressure on the global system
When questioned about whether the mixed international responses point to a decline in a Western-dominated global framework, both experts indicated that the transformation of the international system has been underway for some time.
One expert explained that part of this shift stems from evolving US foreign policy approaches, especially during the presidency of Donald Trump.
"President Trump has gone to the UN certainly in his first term, every year, and said that every country has to pursue its own interests... So the whole idea of international order, I think a lot of people in this administration consider (it) to be a way to weaken the United States to no advantage," Alterman said.
He further emphasized that the ongoing conflict may hasten these developments.
"There really is a rupture. And what we should expect the international order to be able to do... may well be very different after this war, however it turns out, than it was before."
The second expert stressed that the weakening of the global order is not a recent phenomenon but rather the outcome of a gradual process.
"The international order is weakening, but it did not start today... This is the result of incremental erosions of international law and the undermining of multilateral institutions," she said.
She also pointed out that nations in the Global South had long been aware of these shifts, while Western countries are only now beginning to experience their impact.
