UAE Says It Intercepted Missiles, Drones

(MENAFN) The United Arab Emirates confirmed Tuesday that its air defense systems are actively neutralizing incoming aerial threats, as authorities acknowledged a drone strike on a telecommunications facility in the emirate of Sharjah.

The UAE Defense Ministry announced via a statement posted on X — the social media platform owned by US billionaire Elon Musk — that air defenses were responding to incoming "missiles and UAV threats," adding that sounds heard across the country were due to the ongoing interception operations.

In a separate announcement, the Sharjah Government Media Bureau disclosed that authorities were responding to an incident involving a drone that had struck the administrative building of Thuraya Telecommunications Company, located in the emirate's central region. The bureau confirmed the drone was traced back to Iran, while stressing that no casualties had been recorded.

Residents were urged by officials to refrain from spreading unverified information and to consult only authorized sources for updates.

The strike comes amid heightened regional tensions that have steadily escalated since the United States and Israel launched a sweeping air offensive against Iran on February 28 — an assault that has claimed more than 1,340 lives to date, among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In retaliation, Tehran has unleashed successive waves of drone and missile attacks against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations, inflicting casualties and infrastructure damage while sending shockwaves through global markets and severely disrupting international aviation.
