Andy Barr Wins GOP Nomination for McConnell Senate Seat

(MENAFN) Andy Barr won Kentucky’s Republican primary on Tuesday in the race to replace outgoing Senator Mitch McConnell, according to projections reported by US media.

Barr, who received strong backing from Donald Trump during the campaign, defeated former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron to secure the party’s nomination.

With Kentucky remaining a heavily Republican state in Senate elections for decades, Barr is now considered the leading contender to win the seat in the general election. According to reports, the last Democrat elected to the US Senate from Kentucky was Wendell Ford in 1992.

Trump played a significant role in shaping the Republican primary contest. In addition to endorsing Barr, reports said he encouraged businessman Nate Morris to withdraw from the race, reducing competition among pro-Trump candidates.

Morris, who had campaigned as a strong supporter of the MAGA movement, reportedly stepped aside after Trump offered him a potential ambassadorial position, according to reports.
