UN Assembly Urges US to Lift Cuba Embargo
The draft received support from 130 countries, including Türkiye. Seventeen nations voted against the measure, among them the US, Israel, Ukraine, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, while 25 countries abstained.
Speaking before the vote, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said the restrictions were directly affecting everyday life across Cuba, contributing to shortages of fuel, medicines, food and other basic necessities.
“Cuba is not a threat. The blockade is a threat,” Rodriguez said, describing the embargo as an instrument of economic pressure directed at the Cuban population.
“We are not talking about numbers. We are talking about human lives,” Rodriguez said, adding that the consequences were evident “at the dining table of Cuban families” as well as among patients receiving treatment in hospitals.
US Representative Mike Waltz disputed Cuba's account of the sanctions, maintaining that the country's economic problems stemmed mainly from decisions made by its own government.
Since 2012, resolutions passed by the General Assembly have repeatedly called on Washington to bring the embargo against Cuba to an end.
